Homeschool Mother's Journal #24: Moving Forward!

The Homeschool Mother's Journal

In my life this week...
I finished the training for my job; passed the tests and have 40 hours scheduled for next week. YAY ME! And isn't it about time?! Sheesh what I've gone through lately with jobs! But it's done and life moves forward steadily.

In our homeschool this week...

We're at the end of our Term II break. We did nothing this week. We've been on break all month. We've hiked and geo-cached. We've hung out playing Just Dance 3. We've baked and visited parks. We've enjoyed being lazy and just resting. It's been good.

Term III begins on Monday. Did you see that? I said, "Term III". Wow! We're coming up to the end of our school year already! December..January...February and then break in March. Boom! April 1st begins the 2012-13 school year!  Definitely moving forward...where did the time go?

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…

Stop trying to be like "so and so" or equal to the public school system. Guess what.. "so and so" doesn't have it down perfect either. And if the public school system is so wonderful, you wouldn't have your kids at home, would you?  Relax, be you and let your kids be themselves. Everything else will fall into place.

My favorite thing this week was…
Finishing the training and having work hours available to me immediately. The timing couldn't be more perfect really.

I’m cooking…
I have no ideas about what I will cook this week, but I made my grandma's chocolate pie a few days ago.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share…

"When you want to teach children to think, you begin by treating them seriously when they are little, giving them responsibilities, talking to them candidly, providing privacy and solitude for them, and making them readers and thinkers of significant thoughts from the beginning. That’s if you want to teach them to think." -Bertrand Russel

But first...
Where are you in your homeschool year? Coming back or going on a break? Half-finished?

Happy Homeschooling!

  2. Yes we are. It makes the year seem so short when you see all the others doing that "back to school" in the fall. But we've been going since April.

    Thanks for stopping in tettelestai!

  3. It sounds like the timing of your job training was perfect since you were in between terms in homeschooling.  Glad that you did so well!

  5. Great quote! And congratulations on finishing your job training and getting 40 hours next week. How do you work full-time AND homeschool? You must be a very busy Mom! LOL

Where are we in our year? Well, we're closing in on 1/2 way! Our year goes from the day after portfolio assessments to the next assessment. LOL But the bulk of it is completed September-April.

  8. Jessy,
Good question. It isn't always easy but as a single mom, I really have no choice. I do own a cleaning service and when that's "busy", I work a lot less. But during the "off" times, I have to work full time to make what a handful of cleanings usually bring into the house.

But the way I manage to accomplish it is to work 7-8am. Homeschool 9-11 for family studies; set the girls on their independent studies to make lunch. Alexis' independent lessons take until 2pm but she's 13 so it's all good. I work again 1-6pm. I pull another 6 hours on Saturday and 3 hours on Sunday. Ta-da! :p

You must feel great to be at your halfway mark! Thanks for stopping by The Holistic Homeschooler!

  9. Someone else has their schedule "off" the normal one!  We run our terms roughly January to January.  Never meant to, it just worked out that way.

  10. OH so I'm not the only freak? LOL! That's what happened to us too. I had switched Alexis from the county's "home education program" to a private school in the month of April. For record keeping purposes, it just made more sense to start from where I was. So.. April - March it is!!

    Thanks for visiting!
