Heritage History Review

little girl holding history CD

Since discovering the Charlotte Mason method of educating children, I have used several history curricula: AmblesideOnline, Story of the World and Tapestry of Grace, to name a few. While all were wonderful, none were the perfect fit for our family. I found that we did better if I designed the curriculum myself. Mind-wracking as writing curriculum is, it worked best for us.

This year, I decided that I would make an investment in a Kindle. When I wrote our curriculum and purchased the books online, I found the Kindle had paid for itself right away. Almost immediately, I learned about Heritage History, a history curriculum designed to be used with an e-reader.

And so began my love affair with Heritage History. I obtained a copy of the "Ancient Greece" curriculum a few months ago and we've been using it faithfully. We really enjoy it. Imagine my delight when Heritage History offered to send me the "Young Readers" curriculum (free) so that I can write a review for you!

Features:

Classical Curriculum*: Each CD is loaded with biographies, narrative and military histories, mythology, legends and historical literary works. Heritage History is a history curriculum designed to be used on an e-reader such as Kindle. However, the entire curriculum comes on a CD-ROM and may be printed out or read on the computer. Each of the curriculum CDs contains pages which can be used as a study guide and can be printed and put into a binder. The study guide includes an overview of the era being studied, descriptions of major characters, timeline events, information on battles, and a large collection of maps in both outline and detail formats. Also, the CD contains accountability and planning forms.

Classical Library*: If you want to forgo the study guides and accountability forms, there is the option of purchasing the literature only. As well, individual books* can be purchased for $1.99 but I see greater value in purchasing the CDs.

Which types of homeschools would benefit from this?
This is great for any style of homeschooling, but fits in perfectly with Charlotte Mason and Classical methods. It can be used in conjunction with AmbleSideOnline, Story of the World, Tapestry of Grace, Omnibus and others which rely on whole, living literature. This program is for you if you:

  • value living books
  • are not looking for an "open and go" curriculum
  • want affordable books
  • feel comfortable choosing books from a suggested list

I've been using this curriculum this year and I will continue to use it throughout our homeschool journey. It's simple, convenient, affordable and effective.
